Sometimes I feel like the most awkward person in the entire world when I have a repairman at my house. I never know what to do. Hover or give him space? Talk or don’t talk? Hi, welcome to my home, it’s kind of like middle school here.

Today a guy came to replace the little screens on the side of the house that cover the crawl space. Have you guys seen that Dirty Jobs show? I think I should have them come follow this guy around. “Crawl Space” should probably be renamed “I Would Rather Fork My Own Eye Than Crawl Here.”

He was working in the backyard, which is where I send the kids when I need to “get stuff done,” also known as, “Karen’s hungry for some sugar and needs to banish all witnesses.” I felt kinda bad about sticking the guy with all the kids, but that was only until I went outside to offer snacks. Then I felt REALLY bad.

I walk out to find the poor guy surrounded by muddy children on bikes. Like a gang. They have forgone all activities and are intent on staring at him as he hammers and pounds. Truman, who is on the edge of a cold, is looking particularly snot-nosed and disheveled. “The little one lost a shoe, so I put it back on him.” Repairman: 1. Mom: 0.

“I made snacks! ONE FOR YOU TOO!” I have to yell, so that he knows I’m talking to him, because I don’t know his name. I proffer a baby cup sampling of a recipe I’m currently developing, which is unfortunately a crusty, violent shade of blue. (Coming soon! Aren’t you so excited??) He eyes it warily. “I’m good, thanks.”

What, don’t you trust my completely unrecognizable food experiments?? This is PERFECTLY NORMAL BEHAVIOR.

Speaking of food experiments. I was testing another recipe a while back and had some leftover squares of puff pastry. So naturally I filled them with Nutella and baked them. OH MY.

Puff pastry is something else guys. It’s kind of like eating a cloud…that’s made of butter. The best part is that all you have to do is take it out of the box. I’m all about the easy these days. If you’re feeling ambitious, try out this 15-Minute Puff Pastry from Dessert for Two. Looks amazing.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Come back on Friday for Galentine’s Day, V-day’s way hotter cousin. I’ll have another Nutella recipe for you, because love is in the air, and, well guys, I love you, okay?

^ On the left is the size you want for larger puffs. To make the size shown in the photos, cut them one more time vertically, as shown on the right.

Little puff…big puff. I added raspberry jam, sshhh!! So good. Try it, but not on the little ones. You need more space if you’re doing two fillings.

These 2-ingredient Nutella Puff Pastry creations are the perfect appetizer or dessert for when you want something chocolatey, easy, and fast. So...basically I will be making these every day for the rest of my life.

Ingredients

  • flour, for dusting
  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry, I used Pepperidge Farm
  • 1/2 to 1 cup Nutella

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat, or grease well.
  • Spread out the sheet of puff pastry on a clean work surface sprinkled with flour. Flatten it out with your hands or use a rolling pin to smooth it a bit.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut the pastry into 3 strips (right along the fold lines). Make 4 cuts the other way, so you end up with 12 squares.
  • At this point you can add the Nutella and bake, or if you want the baby ones that are shown in the final photos, split each square in half one more time to make a rectangle (see photos).
  • Use two spoons to add a very small amount of Nutella to the center of each piece of dough. Seriously, we're talking like a teaspoon at the most. (Add a little more if you are only making 12 puffs.)
  • Fold the dough over and seal by pinching them together with wet fingers. Have a bowl of water nearby to keep your fingers wet.
  • Place the sealed dough on the prepared baking sheet. Continue with the rest of the dough.
  • Bake 9-12 minutes, or until the tops are golden.

  1. If I stuffed the puff pastry the day before needing them would it keep in the fridge? Need to prep ahead as much as possible. Would I be able to freeze the puff pastry and Nutella pockets and then Thaw and cook day of party?

    1. Hey Alexandra! I bet you could chill them in the fridge! I wouldn’t try freezing them, not sure how that would work.

  2. Hi Karen, I’m wondering how long these would keep and the best way to keep them stored? I’m thinking these look great for a baking exchange but worried they’d get soggy or stale. Thanks!
(PS-I’m going to try them anyway for our own house to eat)!

    1. Hey Melanie, I would store these for 1-2 days in a tupperware on the counter! They are best served within a few hours of making!

  3. i normally do not comment on recipes but this turned out to be so easy and fun and DELICIOUS! I cannot thank you enough, this saved me when I had absolutely no sweets in the house on a snow day…THANKS!

    1. Oh the desperation that comes when there are no sweets in the house!! :) I’m glad this saved you!!

  4. I am trying to sign up to get your recipes, etc. but I don’t do Facebook, Twitter, etc., just email. Can you help? From what I can see, this is the perfect site for me, good recipes and a good laugh. Please help to sign up.

    1. Hey Mary! Thanks for the compliments! You’re awesome. I just checked my list and looks like you have successfully signed up! You should get an email every time I post (look for one tomorrow morning! Check your spam folder if it doesn’t show up.) Just an FYI though, there is a sign up form in the side bar where it says, who doesn’t want free recipes? (Because seriously. who doesn’t want free recipes.) Thanks for signing up Mary!

  5. Bahaha – I am JUST as awkward around repairmen. I never know if I should offer water, or just stand there awkwardly talking about my cats. Probably eating too. (puff pastry + nutella?? genius!)

    1. DEFINITELY stand around talking about cats. I’ve heard it inspires repairmen to do their best work. Also, this will be you someday (see #13).

  6. And this is why I let my husband talk to/interact with workmen. :) When we replaced our furnace/AC last spring, he brought in at least SEVEN different men from various companies to get quotes. I didn’t participate in any of those meetings. Although I did tell him I wasn’t too impressed with the one who used the F-word throughout the conversation (he didn’t get the job).

Also, I think my food blogger status might have to be revoked because I still have NEVER TASTED NUTELLA!

  7. Bwahahahaha! The guy must’ve been wondering what Honey Boo Boo universe he entered in your yard! “The little one lost his shoe so I put it back on him” <– pure gold! I love chatting with random strangers but for some reason, I totally leave repairmen/handymen alone when they come to my house. I hide behind doors and wait until they leave. It's a charming quirk of mine. These nutella puffs need to materialize in front of me right now. Pastry & nutella? Life doesn't get better than this! That is, until you reward us with the blue crusty thing.

  8. This is my kind of recipe! And I just made a huge tray of brownies for the guys that came over with snow blowers to rescue me from all this snow. I always think it feels awkward when people are working hard around and you’re sitting on your butt, shoving food in your face! :-)

  9. Haha I am the same way with people that have to come over to do work. My three year old is so curious and always tries to chat them the entire time making them feel even more awkward. I should make these yummy treats next time to keep my son occupied so he doesn’t bug anyone haha. They look delicious! Love the puff pastry!

    1. omg, yes!! Charlotte was talking to the guy (who came back again yesterday) NONSTOP. What are you doing?? What’s that?? I’m 3. My birthday is this week. How old are you? haha. He was really nice about it but I felt bad for the poor guy!

  10. Your posts always make me laugh. I feel the same when the Orkin man comes, but it’s a lot more awkward because he goes in the bowels of my closet. I always forget to pick up my bras. I can never look him in the eyes…I mean, he’s seen my underwear. these look super yummy by the way!

    1. Hahahaha!!!! This wins. I will have to remember this next time someone comes over. At least they’re not seeing my bras!! hahaha

  11. Your post totally made me giggle! I am the same way with anyone that comes over. I mean are you suppose to sit and make sure he’s fixing it correctly or are you suppose to kick your feet up and let him do all the work. Totally a weird position to be in. I hate it. Love that you gave him dessert too. Any one would love these. They look perfect. I have never cooked with puff pastry. I buy it then it expires in my freezer. I am gonna make these for Valentines Day! Thanks! Pinned. ;)

    1. Exactly!! This reminds me of my first day at my first real job as an admin. I was supposed to make like a bajillion copies of something and wasn’t sure what I should do–babysit the copier or let it do it’s thing while I do something else? I opted for staying, and then my boss walked by and I was panicking trying to look Super Busy. haha.

Cyndi, you have to try puff pastry. It’s amazing. I think this recipe will be a good inaugural use :)

  12. Oh my gosh I know what you mean. When my housecleaner is here I’m all…hi. Thanks for cleaning up after my messy self. Oh? You want to come in my office? Okay let me move for you. It’s awkward!

    THESE? Not awkward. Amazing!

    1. Oh I know! I don’t have housecleaners but my brother does and we lived one summer with him. So awkward! Made me feel so lazy.

  13. I frequently offer the FedEx guy snacks since he’s pretty much at my house every day. You know what? He has yet to accept a damn cookie. Maybe I look suspicious with all the wine deliveries coming to the house? Eh, more for us. Love this recipe. Pinned.

    1. You need to find out his weakness Jennie. Get into this guys head. Maybe he’s gluten free? Maybe he only likes ice cream? Maybe he hates chocolate? Crack the code. I believe in you. (I’m all about forcing people to eat my food. It’s a lovely trait.)
