This bright breakfast smoothie is a healthy way to start off any summer morning! It’s got watermelon and orange, yes, but also tomato and carrot. Don’t be weirded out. It’s so good!

Are you good at guessing people’s ages? I’m the worst. I have a strict no-guessing policy (this goes for pregnant ladies too–or NOT PREGNANT LADIES.)

Get this story: my mom used to work as a telephone operator. (First of all, how cool is that.) One day she asked one of her coworker friends if she was pregnant and the girl said NO. My mom was horrified obviously, but THEN, her friend came back a few weeks later and said that she actually was pregnant at the time my mom asked and didn’t even know it. Moral of the story? Don’t ever ask people unless you already know, or unless you happen to be psychic like my mom.

A friend of mine told me this story about a huge family reunion she went to when she was 12. She looked really young for her age. Some relative she hadn’t seen in years came up to her.

“You sure are getting big! How old are you now, 6?
Um, no.
Are you 7?  No.  8?  No.  9?  No.  10?  No.  11?  No.

YOU’RE FIVE???”

Aaaaand this is why you don’t guess my friends. You could very well be the reason somebody has to go to therapy someday.

Sunshine Smoothie time! Okay so there isn’t ACTUALLY sunshine in this smoothie, but I swear it’s pretty close to what the real deal must taste like. (No, not burning hot molten lava, smart aleck.) The real name for this smoothie is Red Juice, because my awesome sister-in-law Reesy made it up, and that’s what she calls it. It’s not exactly juice, but I suppose calling it a smoothie is a stretch too, since there are only a few ice cubes in it.

Well call it what you want, it’s delicious, and it’s the perfect start to a summer morning. Don’t be put off by the carrot and tomato, I swear it doesn’t taste like nasty vegetable smoothie. (I’m picky. Trust me.) Carrots and tomatoes are quite sweet, and the natural sugar in the watermelon doesn’t hurt either. Reesy told me that she often uses cantaloupe in place of the watermelon (wouldn’t be as sweet), or you could even try mango or peach. This recipe makes two 16-ounce smoothies, but it’s really easy to cut in half if you’re breakfasting alone.

  1. thank you for this recipe! I’ve been looking for tweaks to my “go to” smoothies, and this was linked from Crazy for Crust among 22 of the BEST smoothie recipes, so will have to try it, I was intrigued by the carrots and the tomatoes in this recipe, not scarred since I usually add spinach and other stuff, but never thought of those two so happy to try it!

    1. I’m so happy to hear that Sabrina! Yeah I’ve added spinach to smoothies but this was my first experiment with tomatoes and carrots! I hope you loved it :)

  2. I love your writing in this entry (and in most, if not all, of them). The conversational tone is always so polite, but familiar. I’ve been looking for a good smoothie recipe, and this just might be it. Have a nice day!

  3. I have a silly question, I love the sound of putting carrots in but is it hard to blend if you don’t have a vita-mix? Thanks

    1. Not a silly question Sarah! I have a Ninja and it works great. If you have a less expensive blender then it will still work, I might just chop the pieces a bit smaller. Watch it and add more liquid if you need to. Hope this helps! Enjoy!

  4. Haha! I hate guessing age and DON’T guess mine :) True story I got carded for a rated R movie the other day. Aparently I don’t look a day over 18. ha! This smoothie look awesome- love the addition of carrots!
