…or maybe I should say healthier. Healthier than leftover Almond Roca Bars. Or ice cream or cookies. Which is what I usually end up eating when I am scrounging for a snack.

And when I say scrounging, I really mean it. I’m not accustomed to planning my snacks; it’s usually a desperate search, and I give in to the sweets very quickly. But I’m trying to change that. I eat snacks every day, so why not plan them out as I do meals? It’s really not hard. Just plan out a few snacks for the week and add it to your grocery list. Easy. And then I don’t have to feel like a hunter-gatherer in my own kitchen.

I’ve tried to keep this list non-obvious. I looked up a lot of snack lists to compile this (no they are not all my ideas, thanks a million Internet) and many of them simply list every fruit known to man. Obviously, if you have a peach or a pear in your fruit basket, or a cup of yogurt in the fridge, and you are in the mood for that, then eat it. But if you are craving something a little more unique, then this is the list for you.

When I was in college I bought yogurt by the case. My roommate and I shared groceries, probably to her disadvantage. We were trying to eat on a budget, but we weren’t very creative and ended up eating the same things constantly. I brought a yogurt on campus with me every day. Every day. You can only eat so much yogurt. Sometimes I skipped it, so it would be left in my backpack where I would find it days later. I was so cheap that I couldn’t bear to throw away a perfectly good 2 day old yogurt, but I also couldn’t bring myself to eat it. So I would take a permanent marker and write on it, “This yogurt has been out of the fridge for over 48 hours, eat at your own peril” with a skull and crossbones. There it would sit until all the other yogurts were gone…And I honestly can’t remember if I ever reached that level of desperation.

28 Healthy Snacks

1. Tuna mixed with Greek yogurt and your favorite spices, spread onto celery sticks.
2. Peaches, nectarines, or grapes mixed with cottage cheese and sprinkled with cinnamon.

3. Or for a slight variation, fold smashed ripe nectarines into low-fat cottage cheese and spoon onto gingersnaps.
4. Banana dipped in Biscoff Spread. (This is so good.)
5. Easy blueberry compote: toss blueberries with olive oil and cinnamon and pan-fry until they’re on the brink of bursting; eat warm.
6. Kiwi stacks: crown kiwi slices with dollops of honey-sweetened sour cream (or vanilla greek yogurt) and scatter chopped pistachios on top.
7. Pumpkin spread: Stir together tahini, canned pumpkin puree and a little apple juice and cinnamon. Spread on toasted whole grain cornbread.
8. Mini banana cream pie: Spread graham crackers with vanilla greek yogurt and top with banana slices.
9. Hard boiled egg with salt and pepper. This will make you surprisingly full. Here are some great tips for perfect hard boiled eggs.
10. Egg salad (hard boiled eggs, mayo, mustard, salt, pepper, paprika). Half a sandwich on whole wheat bread. Or try dipping veggies in it.
11. Spread toast with peanut butter and sprinkled with chopped almonds (and if you are feeling devilish, a tiny sprinkle of brown sugar too). Or instead of the almonds do banana slices.

12. Deviled eggs
13. Tuna mixed with a little mayo and pickle relish; scoop up with Romaine spears or make a lettuce wrap.
14. Veggies dipped in hummus (carrots, celery, bell pepper)
15. Apple dipped in peanut butter (or spread peanut butter on top of an apple slice and sprinkle with pecans)
16. Sunflower seeds
17. Tortilla topped with egg salad, shredded carrots and cucumber slices
18. Lettuce wrap (try two slices ham with 2 teaspoons honey mustard rolled in a lettuce leaf)
19. Take a piece of ham. Squirt a line of mustard on it. Roll it up and eat it. Don’t knock it til you try it! This packs a good protein punch.

20. Five pecans roasted with 2 teaspoons maple syrup and 1 teaspoon cinnamon
21. Half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole wheat bread
22. Sliced bell pepper with Laughing Cow Babybel cheese
23. Graham crackers with light cream cheese and sliced red grapes (this is my new favorite! Eric says it taste like cheesecake.)
24. Cottage cheese sprinkled with salt and pepper; dip crackers or veggies in it
25. Split a date, sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice, fill with a pecan. My sister thinks this taste like pecan pie.
26. Roasted chickpeas (try these or these)
27. Spread peanut butter on saltines. Top with thin strawberry slices. Drizzle with honey and top each with another saltine.
28. 1/2 cup pure orange juice, frozen and eaten as sorbet.
